5 Outdoor Activities to enjoy this Autumn

Personal notes and stories from the Great Outdoors..jpg

Autumn is finally here! And the school holidays will soon be upon us. The leaves are about to start changing, the days are getting shorter, and mornings are starting to grow colder and crisp.

With the autumn season in full swing and the inevitable changes in its weather patterns, it is still important for us to feel positive and make the most of the many fun outdoor activities we can still enjoy doing outdoors.

So, it is time to continue embracing those special moments in the outdoors and not let the seasonal change get the better of us.

Here are a few of my favourite activities to do this autumn:

1. Go Mountain Biking

It is fair to suggest that you can go mountain biking at any time of the year, but there is something about being out on the bike in the chilly autumnal air.

Mountain Biking offers excellent exercise opportunities and chance to be out among all the bright orange, red, and yellow leaves all scattered all around the woodland floor. It not only makes for a great day out on the bike, but it renders these opportunities that little bit more appealing.

With so many routes to be found all around, it makes perfect sense to enjoy the seasonal changes while outside tackling a hilly climb or a downhill section through the woodland trails.

One of my favourite locations to Mountain Bike is Wales, but even in my home in the Netherlands, there are plenty of places to enjoy those adrenaline moments.

2. Go Climbing

One of the best times of the year to rock climb is during the autumn period. As leaves begin to drop from the trees and the once lush greenery gives over to the onset of winter, rock faces become more exposed.

The cooler weather that begins to prevail also means that will be fewer insects flying around your face as you make your way up the cliff!

If you are not into climbing outdoors, then many climbing and bouldering centres offer the perfect alternative. Many indoor walls cater for all abilities and provide a great incentive to do some climbing indoors, especially if the weather becomes too cold and gloomy.

They are well equipped and offer an excellent ambience for all to enjoy.

3. Enjoy Some Photography.

Like others out there, I enjoy my photography, and where and whenever possible, it is great to get outside and capture a few images.

The autumn season can provide the perfect weather conditions for the classic picture. Bright multi-coloured leaves, falling from the trees and scattered on the floor. Teeming autumn wildlife, colourful pumpkins, together with the first frosts, and moody foggy mornings continually make for great photo opportunities.

Being in the right place at the right time is always pretty important, but autumn offers this in abundance. With that in mind, get outside and see for yourself what fantastic autumn inspiration you can capture on your camera!

4. Go Camping.

Don't be a fair-weather camper who only sleeps under the stars during the summer months. Camping is still a possibility during the colder months.

Fresher, dryer weather conditions often mean camping conditions will be suitable for all. In most cases, there will be fewer bugs, and fewer people, so the autumn period will remain a high possibility of being one of the best times to go camping.

It is essential to remember some warm clothing, a suitable sleeping bag and appropriate equipment to cook with and keep warm under the stars at night. With those elements fully covered, you'll be toasty and comfortable in the chilly autumn air!

A great camping site resource.

5. Go For A Walk.

Walking during the autumn months can be enjoyable for all who venture out on the walk. A wide range of different landscape will always offer outdoor enthusiasts with some great places to wander and explore.

Taking a hike through the misty, moody coniferous woodland is very appealing as the atmosphere captures the imagination and begins to create stories in your mind.

There is something poetic and enchanting about the beauty of an autumn woodland walk. Where the crisp, red and orange leaves fall freely from the deciduous oaks and beeches, only to settle on the forest floor, crunch underfoot as you meander and roam freely.

Of course, there are many more wonderful options to enjoy over the autumn. These are just a few and a few of my personal choices.

There is no doubt autumn provides the perfect season for any of us to get outside and enjoy, all we have to do is go out and make the most of it!
